How does weed and seed washdown work?
A weed and seed washdown system supports the controlled removal of soil, seeds and organic material from vehicles, plant and machinery before they move between work areas or sites.
The washdown procedure must still follow the inspection and clean-down requirements applying to the project. The equipment provides the contained area needed to clean the vehicle and manage the material and wash water removed.

Inspect
Check the vehicle or machine and identify the areas where soil, seeds and organic material may collect. Follow the inspection points and clean-down procedure nominated for the site or project.

Wash
Clean the wheels, tracks, underbody, guards, chassis and other nominated areas within the contained washdown area.

Capture
Keep dislodged material and wash water within the containment area so solids can be screened or filtered and the water directed towards its selected management pathway.
The required inspection, sign-off and any weed-and-seed declaration or certificate are determined by the relevant site, client or authority. Trade Wash supplies washdown equipment and does not issue clean-down certification.

How does weed and seed washdown filtration work?
Weed and seed washdown filtration uses screens or filtration bags to retain dislodged seeds, plant material and coarse sediment before captured wash water is transferred from the bay. The filtration arrangement should be selected around the expected debris load, wash-water volume and the site’s clean-down procedure.
Physical filtration is only one part of the washdown system. It does not remove dissolved contaminants, hydrocarbons or every fine suspended solid, and it does not by itself make the water suitable for discharge or reuse.

Where should weed and seed washdown water go?
Captured weed and seed washdown water needs a defined destination after seeds, plant material and coarse sediment have been screened or filtered.
The appropriate pathway depends on the contaminants likely to be present, available site infrastructure, proposed water reuse and the requirements of the relevant authority or waste provider.

What is a weed and seed washdown system?

Can a weed and seed washdown system accommodate heavy machinery?
A system can be configured for trucks, excavators, loaders, graders and other heavy equipment, provided the containment footprint, access equipment and protective components are selected around the proposed machinery. The largest vehicle dimensions, operating weight, axle or point loads, wheeled or tracked configuration and turning approach should be confirmed before equipment is selected.
How are seeds and plant material captured?
The bunded washdown area contains the wash water and material released during cleaning. Screens or filtration bags can then retain seeds, plant material and coarse sediment before the captured water is transferred onward. The retained material and used filtration media must be managed in accordance with the site’s clean-down and biosecurity procedures.
Can weed and seed washdown water be discharged to stormwater?
Filtered wash water should not be assumed suitable for stormwater discharge. Physical weed and seed filtration does not remove every fine solid, dissolved contaminant or hydrocarbon. The intended holding, treatment, reuse or approved discharge pathway should be confirmed with the relevant authority or waste provider before the system is finalised.
Does a weed and seed washdown system make the site biosecurity compliant?
The equipment supports containment, filtration and wash-water management, but it does not by itself certify a vehicle, machine or site as weed and seed free. Clean-down procedures, inspections, certification, retained-waste handling and project or authority requirements remain specific to the operator and site.
